Gatineau sector, the excitement of a big city

The population is estimated at around 120,000 inhabitants. With a booming tourism industry, residences and real estate projects in Gatineau are multiplying.

Located less than 15 minutes from Ottawa and 2 hours from Montreal, the area is the perfect place for a home construction project.

The crucial role of the river

The banks of the river already had several villages, the oldest of which dates back to 1830. This vast territory boasts architectural treasures still in excellent condition, such as the Collège Saint-Alexandre (1907), as well as the district of Moulin (1926) which contributed to the development of the forest industry and education.

Native Americans have used the Gatineau River for centuries. This river played a crucial role in the 17th and 18th centuries, being one of the main routes of the fur trade. Then during the 19th and 20th centuries, the river turned into the main artery for the timber trade.

Wetlands, an exceptional natural site

The Ottawa River, an important waterway in the area, is a wetland with diverse and remarkable flora and fauna. The Quebec government is also planning to create a wildlife refuge to protect and enhance the marshes and swamps of this region. This refuge will probably extend from McLaurin Bay to the limits of Plaisance National Park. The natural area currently supports 13 species of birds designated as priority by the North American Bird Conservation Initiative.

Services worthy of a big city

Public transportation is provided by the Société de transport de l’Outaouais.

As for the schools, there are enough to serve the population well:

Primary: École de l’Envolée, École l’Oiseau-Bleu, École de la Montée, École Raymond, and École du Nouveau-Monde;
Secondary: École Polyvalente le Carrefour, École secondaire du Versant, École Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau;
College: Cégep de l’Outaouais Campus Félix-Leclerc.

The Gatineau sector has its own hospital, located downtown on Boulevard La Vérendrye Ouest.

Gatineau has a variety of grocery stores, mainly supermarkets: IGA extra Famille Charles, Metro Plus Kelly Maloney, Metro Plus Montée Paiement, Metro Plus Gréber, Maxi & Cie, Super C.

Regarding the restaurants, there is plenty of choice and diversity, including Ben & Florentine, La Belle et la Boeuf, Resto Bistro Rumeur, Portugalos Restaurant, Resto-Bar La Drave, Haru Izakaya, Restaurant L’académie, Restaurant Meule et Caquelon, Shaker Cuisine & Mixology and Sterling.

The Mecca for Preserving Canada's Documentary Heritage

On Boulevard du Carrefour, we find the Gatineau Preservation Center of Library and Archives Canada. In order to protect the most precious documents in Canadian history, a sumptuous steel and glass building was constructed. This conservation gem houses conservation laboratories, as well as numerous vaults. Other government buildings also point to the important role of government administration in the economy of the region.
